Setting up ZOTAC ZBOX nano AD Remote for XBMC

Getting the Windows, Info and Colored buttons to work

The included Zotac remote is Windows MCERemote compatible but the additional buttons (Windows, Info, Colored buttons) will not work out of the box. The XBMC MCERemote add-on will fail with:

 * Warning
 * The ReportMappingTable registry key is not present
 * No Microsoft remote is installed

Good News

But before I begin, if this helps you please do +1 or share it as that helps me.

So take the MCERemote registry files, this, this,0 and this thread and a 3 hours and you get a tweaked Zotac Remote Registry Fix below; it labels all keys I could discover and maps some as follow:

  • The Windows remote key to Win keyboard key (perfect if you are running Windows 8)
  • The Colored Buttons to Ctrl 1 through 4
  • The Info button to 'Ctrl D' - XBMC display info
  • [T] Teletext? key to send 'T' - XBMC toggles subtitlies
  • The '≡' right of 'T' to send 'C' - XBMC display contextual menu

Copy and paste the below into a file on your dekstop named 'zotact.reg' and double click on it and then restart your computer. If you have any issues feel free to contact me and I will try to assist and if you do find this helpful do follow me on twitter: @danielsokolows.

  1. this only works when not using the usb IR receiver. When that one is plugged in and used, this registry configuration is not used at all. Any knowledge about this?

    1. Try changing the remote id above to read: '745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da' if that fails try the following: on my machine there are multiple registry entries under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HidIr\Remotes\' and I had to figure out which one was the correct one to modify so I did the following:

So back that registry tree up and do the following:

      1. Get this file https://github.com/jhsrennie/MCERemote/blob/master/resources/data/CreateTestConfig.reg
      2. Modify it so the '745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da' is the same as the one in your registry.
      3. Merge the new registry into your system.
      4. Reboot system for changes to take effect.
      5. Use ShowKey from http://xbmcmce.sourceforge.net/ and test if your test configuration has been loaded, if not move onto the next entry in your registry and repeat.

Once you find the right remote you still might have to do a custom mapping.

  2. I already tried all of this. I even deleted all remotes under the "Remotes" branch in the registry. The remote still worked!
So, when using the external IR receiver, the mapping of remote buttons to functions must be somewhere else!

  4. Hi there,

I'm searching for a fix for my ZBox AD04 remote, and tried your patch with no success. What surprises me from your code is this string: "RemoteName"="RC6 based MCE remote for Philips(OVU710001/00 OTS)"

The only RC6 related string [...-00a0c90f57da] in my registry says "RemoteName"="RC6 based MCE remote". But yours surprised me because my IR receiver has printed "OVU710001/00". Maybe have you patched the string for the receiver, not the remote?

I don't have any string related to my IR receiver. Maybe I should install some driver. Zotac doesn't provide any for AD04, and the receiver works for WMCE right away. But if you'll like to continue this discussion on the thread below, I guess we could help many more people.

  5. Daniel,

This reg file is amazing...been using it for about 1+ months now on Zotac AD12/Windows 8 and its flawless.

Looks like the USB IR receiver does not work using this reg file though...when you get a chance could you try it?

    Thanks!

    1. Hey I'm glad it's working for you, now if we could only somehow move the mouse pointer with navigation keys while maybe holding one of the colored buttons? :)

To answer your question: very unlikely I will try to tackle USB IR version any time soon, free leisure time is very limited at the moment - sorry. The process I used I described here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=116293&pid=1303543#pid1303543 and I will answer questions.

    1. No problem, somewhat related and unsolicited tip: I have switched from uTorrent to Vuze for it's ability to filter RSS feeds based on size - this basic feature is nowhere to be found on over a dozen of the clients I've tested including the most popular uTorrent/Bittorrent. :)

  7. Hello,
The trick you described here would work for USB IR reciever? I tried all the options you described here to no avail.. All the changes I do to registry ( yes I do reboot etc each time I change ) are not effective... So looks like USB remotes are not controlled via Registry .. Are they??
BTW, I'm trying this on ZOTAC Nano AD12 & Windows 7 Ultimate.

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Max71, no - as I understand the USB IR receiver is a different setup, I have never tried to do it on my system. Take a look in your registry '[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HidIr\Remotes\' and replace the '745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57df' in the file above one by one with the list in your system. With luck you will find which entry controls the USB IR and afterwards discover the keys from there. Make sure to back up your registry keys first!

  8. Thanks. Your register edit came in real handy. Using a Zotac AQ01 + Harmony 650 remote.

The Softether server by default to run on port 443 , if you server also hosts normal https then 443 is already taken and so Softether can't bind to it. When you run `vpncmd` it attempts to connect, find an active port, but of course fails with 'Protocol error occurred. How to child proof a fireplace

DIY - Do it yourself fireplace child guard Our wonderful 8.5 month old Sofia has become a crawling race car with an untamed thirst for exploration. And so with the cold nights approaching we needed to child proof the fireplace. This however proved to be more difficult than would reasonably expect, I've checked the local Toys "R" Us, Walmart, and even a Canadian Tire with no success for a ready to use product. Internet search was more fruitful and returned a few online stores one could order from, however in all honestly they didn't look too sturdy to me. So I build my own relatively quickly and inexpensively. Materials needed is a privacy plastic lattice - the smallest hole pattern - a few screws and anchors; tools needed are a drill, and a handsaw if you don't have the lattice cut at the store - that’s it. The construction consits of screwing the lattice into the wall and the final product is easiest explained through following pictures.
